Ahhhh, my first blog and I think it's very fitting to talk about hockey since it is such a passion of this California native. And don't get me wrong, just because I've only seen snow twice in my life (in the Sierra Nevada mountains) and have never lived through a winter that goes below 40 degrees doesn't mean I don't know the first thing about hockey. Because I do. So I went to the San Jose Sharks game on Saturday and we lost to the Ottawa Senators that night 4-1. My favorite player Marco Sturm got the only goal of the night after failing to connect with the back of the net several times earlier in the game. We had a strong first period, even though Nabakov (goaltender) let in a goal because he looked a little lazy getting to the rebound. But besides that, we were strong and pumped. Then came the second period meltdown. The defense looked atrocious! We couldn't clear the puck to save our lives and it totally cost us. Two goals from the Sens put them up 3-0 when the period ended and it looked like we were headed for a second straight shut out if we didn't hurry up and score. And it's not like we didn't shoot. We had more shots than Ottawa, but we couldn't buy a goal. Finally in the third my Marco scored and I seriously thought we were gonna have this totally tubular comeback and win 4-3. But then Jimmy Fahey got caught tripping Marion Hossa, an excellent Ottawa forward, and Hossa got a penalty shot. So Hossa came to Nabby trying to deke him a bit and then shot the puck right at him and Nabby made the save (yay)...or so we all thought. It turned out Nabby didn't squeeze his five hole enough and the puck trickled by him to make it 4-1. And so the game went on and you could hear the sound of 14000 hearts breaking when the final horn sounded for the end of the game. We just couldn't get the puck in the net. It was so depressing cuz we dind't play all too well and were not on top of our game for 40 out of the 60 minutes. But I also can't diminish the fact that the Senators were the best team in the league last year and really deserved to win since they are the "better" team.
If I'm worried about anything this season, it'll be the lack of goals we score...in the beginning. Those fair weather fans out there have to remember that we have a really young team full of rookies and it's gonna be tough the first few games. Call me a homer, but I really beilieve this team has it in them to make it to the playoffs, and hopefully win the Stanley Cup. After all you never know what will happen. Remember those damn Mighty Ducks who weren't so mighty in game 7 against the Devils? Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected that little wiener, Paul Kariya (don't get me started on this guy...well, maybe in a later post), and his team to make it through the first round let alone make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. Once we start practicing more and solidify the team, we're gonna be hella hard to beat. Already I see so much potential in the younger guys like Davison and Michalek. And the new guys we just aquired last season like McCauley and Primeau are so fantastic. I don't know why Penguins fans didn't like Primeau, but I think he's great. He opens up so much ice for speedy players like Marco and Patty Marleau to do their thing. Then we've got the grinders, guys who like to start shit and then fight like Scott Thorton and our newest guy (who's instantly becoming a fan favorite) Scott Parker. Then there are the older veterans who play with so much heart and soul like Mike Ricci and Vinnie Damphousse. And holy cow batman, we have one hell of a defense, and when we get a healthy Stuart back, we're gonna be so tough to beat. We have so many good things going on right now on our team that it would be hard for me not to worry. We just need guys to click on the ice and do their thng. Nope, i'm not worried about my guys, but we do need to start the mad rush of scoring soon!
But I am pissed off at the lack of attendance at our last game. We usually sell out, but only 14 grand came to the Tank, when it can hold 17,496. This was the smallest crowd at the Tank since it's debut as the home of the Sharks in the 93-94 season. You have to support your team, through the thick and thin. We had a less than memorable season last year, but that is no reason why you should not support your team. There should be like a test or something in order to be a fan cuz there are some folks out there who just don't understand the word DEDICATION. The Sharks are gonna be hella good in seasons to come, and then those asshole fairweather fans will come back and say they supported the team the whole time. I don't think so. If your gonna desert your team, you should not be allowed to come back when they start winning again. Go to Colorado cuz we don't want you here in San Jose. And on a side note, the Colorado Avalanche totally blow. I'm so tired of hearing about what a fantastic team they are. God, get over it. Perhaps that will be a later post along with the mega-wiener Kariya. But seeing as it is already 1245 tonite, I should go cuz I'm hella tired. So tune in next time for more opinions and inquiries that I have cuz I really like this blogging stuff. So whatever, I'll type to you later. Toodles
